Gender Equality In The Workplace: Will It Ever Be Equal?

In class we have discussed the topic of Gender Equality and the way it relates to the workforce. This article reinstates that women are only making 79 cents to every dollar a man makes. The same wage pace increase has been going on for over fifty years even though the jobs that men and women have today require more skill and precision. IWPR has projected by 2059 men and women will be getting paid equally, a dollar to dollar ratio no matter the occupation.

Women have always been seen as the "lesser or weaker" sex. Even though most women go to work and work the same work week as men, they then have to come home and either cook dinner, take care of the kids or home, or do whatever it is to get ready for the next day, women still are viewed inferior to men. This is especially important for men and women who hold the same occupation. Why should a woman be paid 21 cents less than a man but have the same responsibilities and then have to put in more work when they get home? Now I'm not saying that this is true for every household but it is a common trait that is seen across the country. Regardless of what men and women do outside of their occupation, they should be paid equally and treated fairly no matter what they do.

Should men and women of the same occupation be paid differently like they are? Or should they be paid the same? Are women more likely to be discriminated against in a workplace of all men, instead of a mix of men and women? Why do you think it is projected to take 44 years for men and women to get paid the same amount for the same occupation? Or do you ever think men and women will get paid equally?

  1. Men and women should most certainly be paid the same wage if they are in the same job. My law teacher last year told us about how employers can get around paying men and women the same wage by slightly changing a job description. In this way, employers can pay women less just by changing a minuscule detail so that their jobs are "different." I don't think that this is fair in any way. If their jobs are essentially the same, why should they be paid less. Gender should not play a role with regards to how much an employee is paid if they are able to perform the same tasks equally. I'm not too sure why it would take 44 years for men and women to be paid the same, but it should not take that long. We live in a country that is characterized by freedom and equality. This is an important issue that should be addressed immediately, not 44 years from now. I think that men and women will be paid equally because our country is moving away from male dominance and towards gender equality.

  2. I think that by now, men and women should be paid fairly. If a women is doing the same job as a man, then they should receive the same amount of money. I think this problems is something we have been dragging since long ago. Many things have changed throughout the years to close the social and legal differences between men and women and they have worked. If all the changes have worked, why the gender pay inequality still remains untouched. We often hear that gender pay gap is narrowing, but there is still a difference and it is unacceptable. Yes, the gap is narrowing, but at this pace we will take decades to merge the gap. Action needs to be taken immediately and I am sure that no one will complaint if the gap is closed tomorrow. Its either decreasing the mens wedge to equal it to women, or increase women salary to pair the mens salary. It doesn't matter what they do, but as long as there is equality and everyone is paid by their work, not by their gender.

  3. It's only logical that men and women who do the same work should be paid the same wage. Studies show that most Americans agree that women and men are capable of doing the same work and that women are as likely, if not more likely, than men to be good leaders. This brings us to the question of why women are, on average, earning less than men. A Pew Research Center survey from 2013 found that women are almost 15% more likely than men to reduce their hours or take time off in order to take care of a child or family member. The time they take off makes it difficult for them to advance in their career. Of course gender discrimination plays a part in the wage gap, but I believe that a large part of it is also the pressure society puts on women to be the center of her family. Women are still expected to be the main caretaker and men are expected to be the provider. Thankfully, these ideas are finally beginning to change, but we have a long way to go. It is shameful that it is going to take 44 years to achieve equal pay, but I think it will definitely happen eventually.

  4. Obviously there are certain situations where women are more capable of doing work and where men are more capable of doing work, and they are paid adequately. But when it comes to the same job where both a man and a woman are equally capable, there is no reason for women to get paid 21 cents less per dollar than men. It just makes no sense to me. Women have made it so far in society within the last 100 years, gaining the right to vote and being seen as an equal in society. So why can't they be paid the same as men? And why is it going to take 44 years for women to finally be paid the same amount as men? Especially in a society where women are more likely to be the caretakers of their household, making meals every night for their families, making sure the kids get to school, making sure the house is clean. All of these responsibilities, and more, are normal for a woman to undertake in the household. There is no question that women should be paid the same as men, and it is just wrong that it is going to take 44 years until they are finally paid equally. The way things are going, I do not think women will ever be paid the same as men, and if they do it will not be for a time longer than 44 years. That's just the way society works, its the same thing with racial equality. Women will always be looked at as less than men, as black people will always be looked at as less than white people. As awful as that sounds, I think it is the sad truth. The biggest thing that is going to need to happen is we need to acknowledge the differences, but not let it altar the way we think about others.

  5. Men and women should be paid the same wage for the same work being done. There is probably no conceivable difference in the quality between the work of a man and woman. If there are 100 units of a product coming out of a factory and the buyer is satisfied with the quality then it shouldn't matter if men made it, women made it, or if both genders jointly made it. The only reason why there should be a difference in wages being paid is if there is a difference in quality. There's no way that women by default put less quality into their work than a man so they shouldn't be paid less than a man in general. In terms of discrimination between genders in the workplace it all depends on the leadership. If a boss (Woman or Man) instills gender equality in their workers then gender equality shouldn't be a huge problem there.

  6. This is an issue that has plagued our nation since its start. Our country is founded and run on this principle of equality and freedom, yet this is the one thing we never seem able to do. We aren't able to see each other as equal, and men vs women is no different. Women are humans the same as men, and so should be compensated and recognized as such. Women have proven and continue to prove that they can do the same thing men can. Recently in the news, we have seen the historical graduation of three women from Army Ranger School. These women, and countless others, have shown the world they can do just what men can do. Women also shouldn't be held to "passive" jobs, like they have been traditionally. Just as women shouldn't be just housewives, women should be given equal opportunity and have the ability to pursue any career they think they are capable of. Just as Nicholas and Sergio said, women should earn an equal wage and be recognized once and for all as equal members of society and human beings.

  7. I agree with most everyone on the idea that men and women should be paid equally. We are a progressive nation and it's absolutely ridiculous that women and men not being paid equally is still an issue. That being said, however, I feel as if women are only seen as inferior because we are still trying to focus on it. Women bring up so many different issues that really have no purpose of being brought up. First of all, I really don't believe that men are the ones who think women are inferior. Women are constantly pointing out things that make them "inferior" that aren't even relevant at all. Why does it matter if the word is "mankind" rather than "wekind"? What's the difference? Why are we still trying to complicate everything when there are so many more important things, such as wage inequality, that we barely focus on. We need to reassess our priorities and make sure we are focusing on the right things.

  8. I agree that regardless of the responsibilities take place at home, it is still ridiculous that woman on average get paid 21 cents less than what men make. So yes 21 cents less does not seem like a large difference at first but it accumulates over time. I feel that woman may be more likely exposed to discrimination if in a workplace with all men opposed to when there is a mixture of both. Men and woman should be paid equally for the same occupation and position they hold. I would love to hear reasoning behind why there is still the gender pay gap today. I believe the gap will continue to shrink, but I am uncertain if it will take more or less than 44 years.
